How Age is Calculated: Understanding Different Age Systems

This calculator uses the standard age system commonly used in most countries, where a person’s age increases on their birthday. For example, a person who is 3 years and 11 months old is considered 3 years old and will turn 4 on their next birthday, one month later.

However, age counting can differ across cultures. In some systems, the current year of life is included or counted differently. For instance, a twenty-year-old may be considered in their twenty-first year. In traditional Chinese age reckoning, a person is considered 1 year old at birth, and their age increases on the Chinese New Year rather than their birthday. This means a baby born just before the New Year could be considered 2 years old only a couple of days later.

A Note on Month Calculations

Sometimes, the calculation of months and days can be confusing, especially when dates fall at the end of a month. This happens because months have different numbers of days.

For example, calculating age from February 28 to March 31 can be interpreted in two ways:

Counting from Feb 28 to Mar 28 as one month, plus 3 extra days

Treating Feb 28 and Mar 31 as full-month ends, giving exactly 1 month

Both methods are valid. Similar situations occur between other months, such as April 30 to May 31. To ensure clarity and consistency, our calculator uses the first method for all calculations.
